Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), also known as autologous conditioned plasma, is a concentrate of platelet-rich plasma protein derived from whole blood, centrifuged to remove red blood cells. PRP stimulates collagen and elastin production which thickens and tightens thinning skin, effectively smoothing wrinkles and fine lines. Because it boosts collagen, it’s also a great treatment for improving overall skin texture and tone. It’s particularly good for people who suffer from rosacea or acne

How does it work?

Before the procedure, a vial of blood sample is taken and spun in a centrifuge to separate the portions of plasma and platelets. Under a topical local anaesthesia, the PRP portions of your blood are injected back into the skin. Over the following 3-6 weeks your skin texture will respond as new tissue cells grow, visible results may continue for up to 6 months post procedure.

How long will the results last?

PRP Treatment results vary from person to person although in most patients the results last up to 18 to 24 months. The use of cosmetic-grade products and other complementary treatments would ensure prolonged results.

Treatment preparation

Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood thinning medications if possible for a period of 2 weeks before treatment.

Who can have this treatment?

PRP can be performed safely and effectively on the majority of patients, though it is most effective on clients that live a healthy active lifestyle. This treatment is not suitable for those suffering from blood-related conditions, anemia, or blood or bone cancers, severe metabolic and systemic disorders, abnormal platelet function, critical thomobocytopemia, haemodynamic instability, anticoagulation therapy and underlying sepsis. PRP therapy is not recommended during pregnancy or while nursing.

Post-treatment care

Medications and supplements such as aspirin, vitamin E, green tea, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil supplements, Ibuprofen and NSAIDS have a blood thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections. Avoid strenuous exercise and excessive alcohol use in the 24 hours after treatment. You should avoid taking anti inflammatory medicines for three to four weeks after a PRP procedure as they may block the beneficial effects of PRP.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of PRP treatments you will need is dependent upon factors such as your age and the condition of your skin. It is recommended that you have three treatments at intervals of four weeks. You will need to have annual maintenance treatments depending upon your personal needs.
